weather radio for home preparednessAs you continue working on your home preparedness, it may seem that there are so many things you want to do and the money just doesn’t cover all of it. I think a weather radio is a key item for preparedness. If your budget doesn’t allow for this survival item, there is a free service that you can use to help in the meantime.

I personally like to keep a watchful eye on the weather. As you know, I live in the Dallas, Texas area and my family lives with the constant possibility of severe weather. This can take the form of thunderstorms and tornadoes during the warmer months and ice or sleet storms in the colder months.

For this reason, I have a weather alert radio in my home. Much to my wife’s displeasure, I have the volume cranked up and it’s programmed for our local county alerts. Although it is designed to be plugged in to the wall, it does have a battery backup feature should I lose power. More

Home Preparedness – Plan For Probable

survival items basic listWhen people think of survival items and home preparedness, they tend to think of those dramatic events that we see on TV and in action movies.

However, one of the most likely scenarios that we will find ourselves facing is fairly common, a power outage for several hours. How often have you lost power at your home or office? Chances are, it has happen more frequently than a solar storm wiping out the power grid or an invasion by zombies.

I’m not saying that these things can’t or won’t happen, I’m just saying that the probability is much lower, so we should increase our odds of survival by beginning our preparedness plans on those situations that are most likely. More

Container for Survival WaterEvery survival list must include water. Now most of us are sitting at our home as we read this and don’t really think about having an ample supply of survival water on-hand in case of an emergency. But in fact, water is incredibly important for our survival and health. It is also helpful in some amount for cooking and personal hygiene.

During a normal day, our body needs about two quarts of water per day just to remain hydrated. This amount can change due to many external and even some internal factors. External factors would include the outside temperature, humidity and the wind. Internal factors that could affect the amount of water we need include; what we eat or have eaten and if we are sweating due to exertion or just heat. Stress can also put requirements on our body for more water. If we are in any type of situation that requires us to use our survival water, we are probably under some amount of stress. More

Every survival list should include food at the top of the list, or within the top three items.

When we think of survival food storage, we often think of someone eating MREs or canned goods in the middle of a room  with dozens of empties scattered throughout the living area. This person is totally prepared for the climactic “end of the world” and now gets to take advantage of the items that have been stored for just this occasion. They appear to be almost happy that they finally get to use their survival items, regardless of the reason. More

Survival ListHaving a survival list is something everyone should consider. This list is more than just items that should be purchased from the store. It is also more than just things you will need, it is about understanding why you need these things and what to do with them. Once a disaster strikes, it could be too late to get those things that you forgot to add or obtain from your list.

The real advantage to having or creating your own list is the fact that is can be as simple or as complex as you decide to make it. Depending on your specific situation, you can tailor the items to your individual needs and lifestyle. You can also work these items into almost any budget.

When preparing a list, you should take into consideration the most basics needs and then expand your list as time and resources are available. Your list should also be based around the people in your family, your pets and where you live. For example, if you live in the desert, you might not need to plan specifically for a hurricane, but water could be a major concern. More
